Still Life Painting 5 Day Intensive

This class runs Monday through Friday. Each day consists of two 3-hour sessions with an hour lunch break between.

This class presents the fundamentals of still life in 5 consecutive days of painting. The different stages of painting will be discussed and demonstrated in detail, including drawing, transfer, value study, first and second painting, and finishing. Basic ideas about structure, light, value and color will also be discussed, as will composition. Our subjects will be simple and the paintings small to make it easier to achieve a finished piece. The procedure will be thoroughly demonstrated, as the instructor will develop a painting alongside the students.

Instructor David Jamieson explains why it's good to study still life: "One of the reasons I love still life is that it offers a limitless supply of subjects to paint. It’s one of the upsides of living in a consumer society… The sheer amount of stuff out there to paint is truly infinite."

"It’s also a great place to start if you’re new to painting. Still life painting is an excellent training ground for learning to paint. All the important elements are there: form, structure, light, color, perspective… all wrapped up in this simple arrangement that – unlike a live model – never moves, never takes breaks, and never has to be paid by the hour. It’s an invaluable way to master the basics, which can then be applied to other subjects."
