Neapolitan Palette focuses on the techniques made popular by Caravaggio in 17th century Italy. Painting on a dark red ground makes it easier to create a painting with high, dramatic contrast. An extended earth palette is employed that offers a large selection of chromatic pigments that create vibrant and rich flesh tones. Shadows are left very thin, almost enveloped by the darkness of the background, while the strong opaque lights give a dramatic and sculptural quality to the picture.
Students are required to prime their canvases before the start of the class with a dark red ground. This information/recipe will be given upon enrollment in the course.
