Cast Drawing is a method by which the student draws from a classical plaster cast to create a trompe l'oeil (a drawing or painting that tricks the eye into perceiving it as a three-dimensional object). Using the sight-size method, students will complete a charcoal drawing of one of the features of Michelangelo's David. The sight-size method allows students to measure and reproduce the subject of their drawings quickly and accurately. The sight-size method and charcoal techniques will be covered in detail. Cast drawing helps the student master value, proportion, and, most of all, measuring. The instructor will perform demonstrations regularly and work with each student to make sure drawings are accurate. This course is open to students of any skill level. Advanced Cast Drawing students will be encouraged to work on a Cast Painting using a premixed scale of Munsell neutral values in oil.
