Underpainting for "Dark Pear"

November 22, 2008

It's been a while since we've made blog posts regularly. Since a lot has been happening around the studio over the past few months, we're going to catch up by posting images now and then of projects and classes from the recent past.

underpainting for dark pear

This image is of the underpainting stage of a painting called "Dark Pear" David did a couple of months back. It's a monochromatic "rub-out" of the image in raw umber on a white ground. This is just one of several ways to do an underpainting (if one does an underpainting at all), but which seems well suited to the hue and value range of the final painting which we'll post next.

"Drawing Board" is a window on the day-to-day activities in the studio. Every few days we'll post work by instructors, class demonstrations, photos of classes in session and anything else that strikes our fancy to document what Vitruvian is all about.

Occasionally, small works will be available for sale via online auction as part of an ongoing fund-raising effort to keep the cost for our classes as low as possible. Works for sale will be accompanied by a direct link to the auction should you wish to place a bid. Thanks in advance, and happy viewing!
