Some people around the studio are already aware of an ongoing anatomy project we've been working on, but we now want to bring everyone else up to speed...
A medical and anatomical supply company approached us a while back to discuss a collaborative effort on a new "muscle figure", or écorché as we call it around here. It seems that anatomical reference figures are useful props for medical schools, teaching hospitals, doctors offices and such, and this company wanted to have a new product to market in that category. We were happy to take the job, and Mindy worked on the project over a few months earlier this year. We'll be posting images occasionally to document the progress of this écorché, starting with the armature.
This figure is free-standing. Most of our écorché figures are supported by an external back iron, but as a consequence of the production process, this piece has to be free of any external obstructions. This means the armature must be strong. Steel is the perfect material for a free-standing armature, so we brought some steel rods to our friend Bobby Joe Scribner, a sculptor who works with metal out in Woodstock, IL. A bit of bribing was all it took to convince him to help us with the welding (Mindy might have baked him a pie), and we returned to the studio with the perfect support structure for this project.
Thanks again to Bobby for his help.
